Its interesting topic to hear that FTTx will be booming soon and one reason why we need it is because of stability of our bandwidth. I would say that this is new challenge for communication industry where we need consistent bandwidth for Internet connection.
Hopefully with the FTTH Council which still happen in Shangri La Hotel, it could fastening this process.

This is my first time here. I had been reading NST's tech articles about mobile Internet, broadband etc and was led to your blog here.
BTW I'm also a tech writer (freelance). Or maybe that should be "was also", for I had not written about tech for quite some time.
But then, I am in the process of starting to write tech articles again... :-) You might know about it `soon'.
But then, with only two English newspapers in Malaysia - and with both reducing their print content - I might not be able to get published again. Leceh betul kalau jadi gini!
Anyway, back to this post: I live in a rural area in Kelantan (by choice), and I'm grateful to get an Internet connection of whatever type. And only with this can I have a fighting chance of being a freelance journalist/writer/sub-editor.
I had faced various problems over the years in trying to get access at my place here. Oh, I've had Tmnet dial-up from 1998 to around early 2002 at my previous place. The speed was only at 28Kbps, but at least I could do research; plus that most-important use - email.
But the Per-minute dial-up rate that works out to RM1.80/hour was a killer!
Anyway, after an absence of six years, since last month, I finally have Internet access from home! :-) I opted for Celcom Broadband; taking the cheapest 384Kbps (RM68) package.
Broadband? No. At my area, it's more like "dial-up, but at a fixed rate". That's because I can only get GPRS 99% of the time - at 53Kbps.
The Celcom Blue Cube people said they are still in the process of implementing 3G to fully cover my area.
I pray it'll be soon - I'll be delirious if I can get just 150Kbps. This is "fast enough" for doing my work - It's NOT for entertainment ... downloading video clips, music etc.
When this happens, I'll consider the RM68/per month fee as VERY CHEAP.
